Week 9 in the SEC

THE SEC WEEKLY RECAP

 

With only a few more weeks left into the regular season of the 2010 FBS season; the match-ups get a little bit more intense and the wins matter more, Auburn has their eyes on the prize and looks like nothing will stop them.  Cam Newton probably wrapped up the Heisman Trophy barring any type of fall back the next couple of weeks; but really who is going to contain him? Green, Jones and Jeffery looking like the best WR’s in the conference with solid performances week in and week out.  With Auburn currently ranked 1^st on the BCS standings; question is can they maintain that rank to play in the BCS Title game? The only game I’m afraid of it if they fall into a trap game, they still have to face Alabama and that can be a huge game. 

With that being said lets check out the action last week in the SEC as they’re some close games and a blowout or two.

Notes – Auburn is currently 1^st in the BCS Standings while Alabama is 7^th and LSU 12^th.  QB Cam Newton currently has 1364yds passing, and 1077yds rushing with a total of 27 touchdowns; Heisman is his to lose.

Lets take a look at the upcoming games this weekend in the SEC.

TENNESSEE @ (17) SOUTH CAROLINA

               I don’t expect this one to be close as I see QB Stephen Garcia continuing to have a stellar season putting up very impressive numbers.  The Volunteers will remain winless in the SEC and Lattimore and Jeffery will put up numbers in this one. 

SOUTH CAROLINA – 34 v. Tennessee – 13

GEORGIA @ FLORIDA

               Can’t believe the Gators aren’t in the top 25, but I seen it coming when Tebow left.  The question in this one is can the Gators defense stop Murray, Ealey and Green? The answer to that will be no, and the Bulldogs will go into Gatorville and give them their 4^th straight loss and will have Meyers sweating, but I don’t think his job should be on the hot seat, hard to replace Tebow in College football.  Florida will give it their best as they’re at home but the Bulldogs will prove too much firepower on offense.

GEORGIA – 41 @ FLORIDA – 24

(3) AUBURN @ MISSISSPPI

               Can you say trap game? No I don’t think so, Cam Newton and company will handle their business as nobody has been able to contain Cam yet; so why would the Rebels? Auburn will keep rolling in this one as the past couple weeks has been close games; this one will turn into a blowout, early! Maybe Cam can throw for 200 and run for 200, or is that a given? The BCS title game is in their view; they know it.

KENTUCKY @ (23) MISSISSIPPI STATE

               Mississippi State keeps on rolling, after their victory over Florida a couple weeks ago they got into the top 25 and moved up one spot in each of the past 2 weeks.  With the Wildcats putting up points the last few weeks and not winning; there due for a win and I think they’ll get it here.

KENTUCKY – 37 @ MISSISSIPPI STATE – 28

VANDY @ (19) ARKANSAS

               The Razorbacks are going to be no contest for Vandy, Ryan Mallett should have a tremendous day and have no problem connecting with Childs.

Week 9 in the WAC

Week 9 Wac Preview:

Wouldn’t it be ironic if a loss to Colorado was what kept Boise St. out of the “Big Game”?  Not saying it will, but Hawaii’s Week 3 loss to the Buffaloes are all that is keeping them out of the top 25 right now.  There only other loss is the opening game to the Trojans, and that was no blowout.  Either way, Hawaii has to take care of the Vandals of Idaho before they meet the Broncos next week.

Boise St. already took care of business with a 49-20 drubbing of LA Tech on Tuesday night.  Tech kept it interesting early with an onside kick and they also handed Kellen Moore his 2^nd Int. of the season.  That wasn’t enough to keep up with Coach Peterson’s crew though as they found plenty of ways to score including finding Moore on a TD reception to add to his 2 passing TD’s.

Nevada should continue to move forward against Utah St. and I’ll let you pick the winner of the San Jose St. and New Mexico St. matchup…if you want…you don’t have to.

Weekly Tid Bit:

Doug Martin’s 150 yards on Tuesday night was a career high.  The Broncos also seemed determined to run the ball more, especially early in the game against LA Tech.  Was this a sign of things to come or just a matter of taking advantage of matchups?  Either way, developing a strong running game is going to be essential to Boise St. as they’ll want to keep teams like Hawaii’s offense off the field as much as possible and control the clock.

Week 9 in the ACC

Around the ACC:

The ACC is ranked seventh in the latest ESPN Conference power rankings behind the SEC, Pac-10, Big 10, Big 12, MWC and WAC…..Something will have to give in the Florida State vs NC State matchup. The FSU defense surrenders an average of only 16.1points per game but will be tested by QB Russell Wilson and a Wolfpack offense that averages 36 points per game. Wilson has accounted for 76 career touchdowns….Florida State QB Christian Ponder busted the bursa sac in his right elbow in the win over Boston College on Oct. 16 and missed three practices a week ago during FSU’s bye week…..Florida States first year head coach Jimbo Fisher has put himself in some very select company by winning his first four ACC games. Only four other coaches have done this previously. Former Maryland and Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Ross won his first five league games as head coach at Maryland in 1982 and Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen (2001), Duke’s Fred Goldsmith (1994) and Boston College’s Jeff Jagodzinski (2007) each won the first four ACC games of their head coaching careers. No coach has ever won his first six ACC games. When Florida State senior G Rodney Hudson was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week last week he earned the eighth Offensive Lineman of the Week honor of his career…..Georgia Tech led the nation in third-down conversions last season. This year they are sixth in the ACC. Tech QB Joshua Nesbitt is only 44 yards from the ACC career rushing record for quarterbacks but was held to only two rushing yards vs. Clemson…..There is a chance that Miami’s impressive freshman OT Seantrel Henderson will move from right tackle to left tackle in place of the injured Orlando Franklin…..Virginia brings a nine game conference losing streak into this week’s home game vs. Miami….Following last week’s 24-21 loss to Maryland, Boston College sits at 2-5 overall and is staring directly at the possibility of its first losing season since 1998…..Maryland redshirt freshman Pete DeSouza was hospitalized in intensive care after a breaking two bones in both legs last Thursday in a scooter accident near Cole Fieldhouse. DeSouza underwent a 12-hour surgery on Friday….Dukes current six game losing streak matches their longest under Head Coach David Cutcliffe.

Clemson (4-3) at Boston College (2-5): Is Andre Ellington the NFL back from Clemson?

Miami (5-2) at Virginia (3-4): The conference losing streak grows to ten games for Virginia.

Duke (1-6) at Navy(5-2): Navy runs their option offense as well as any team in the country. Just ask Notre Dame.

Wake Forest (2-5) at Maryland (5-2): Jim Grobe may start as many as five freshman for Wake Forest this week. Terps need this win to become bowl eligible.

My pick: Maryland 35  Wake Forest 14

William and Mary (6-1) at North Carolina (4-3): UNC had a four game winning streak snapped last week vs Miami. They’ll get back on track this week.

My pick: UNC 38 William and Mary 17

 

 

ACC Power rankings:

 1.     Florida State (6-1, 4-0) Christina Ponder used the bye week to get healthy.

 2.     Virginia Tech (6-2, 4-0) Is playing Duke the week before and official bye week actually two consecutive bye weeks?

 3.     Miami (5-2, 3-1) No major tests on the horizon until Nov. 20 vs Virginia Tech

 4.     NC State (5-2, 2-1) Huge contest this Thursday vs FSU

 5.     Clemson (4-3,2-2) They appear to have righted the ship with two straight wins but NC St and FSU loom on the horizon.

 6.     Maryland (5-2, 2-1) First road win for the Terps since 2008 last week.

 7.     Georgia Tech (5-3, 3-2) Things aren’t good when the Tech running game is struggling.

 8.     North Carolina (4-3,2-2) Not good last week offensively or defensively.

 9.     Wake Forest (2-5, 1-3) Currently on a five game losing streak. Only BCS win was vs Duke in week two.

10.  Virginia (3-4, 0-3) Got their first BCS win last week vs Eastern Michigan.

11.  Boston College (2-4, 0-4) Also on a five game losing streak with no BCS wins this season.

 12.  Duke (1-6, 0-4) Only win was in the opener vs Elon. There are a couple of possible wins on the horizon vs UVA or BC.
