Around the MIAA

Central Missouri quarterback Eric Czerniewski(8,903yds)  and Missouri Western quarterback Drew Newhart(8,266yds) are fourth and fifth respectively in MIAA career passing yardage.

Both are off to a quick starts in 2010 with Czerniewski throwing for 1,263 yards and 13 touchdowns in three games and Newhart throwing for 374 yards and 6 touchdowns while playing 1 and ½ games.

High powered offenses are the norm in the MIAA conference and the conference actually lays claim to having fielded the team with the most prolific offense in NCAA history in the 2004 Pittsburg St team. That Gorilla team led Division II in scoring (55.8 ppg), rushing (354.7 ypg) and total offense (598.4 ypg). Pitt State broke the NCAA’s 118-year-old all-time all division scoring record with 837 points. With 639 wins Pittsburg St is also the NCAA Division II all-time leader.

In one half of play Missouri Western freshman running back Dalton Krysa ran for 207 yards on 21 carries and scored a single game school record five touchdowns against Lincoln.

Fort Hays St quarterback Mike Garrison is averaging 11.7 yards per rushing attempt.

I doubt that the Northwest Missouri St. players, coaches or fans are panicking following their season opening loss. They’ve lost their last three season openers and promptly responded with winning streaks of 12 games in 2007, 13 games in 2008 and 14 games in 2009. The Bearcats have also not lost back-to-back regular season games since 2001.

MIAA Game Previews:

The first full week of conference games starts with some very nice matchups.

Northwest Missouri St. at Nebraska-Omaha: I don’t know if this will be the best game of the week but it’s a huge game for both programs. NWMSU at 0-1 has been in this spot each of the past 3 seasons after losing their season opener and has rebounded each time to make it to the D2 championship game. The Bearcats are still ranked seventh  in the nation but need to get the running game untracked after rushing for only 64yds in their opener. On the flipside the UNO defense has given up a ton of yardage in their 0-2 start. Another loss for UNO and their post-season hopes are probably kaput. My pick: Northwest Missouri  31 –  UNO  24

Missouri Southern at Emporia St. : Southern is 2-0 and has only allowed one TD in their first two games. They are trying to start 3-0 for the first time since 2006. Southern has a four game winning streak vs Emporia State. True frosh RB Steven Sumpter is off to a very nice start for the Lions with four td’s in two games and the Lions rank second in the nation in scoring defense. Emporia State comes in at 2-1 following a 31-13 loss at Central Missouri last week. Emporia State is a ground oriented team the ability of either team to hold down the opponents running game will likely dictate the outcome.  The Hornets are the best team MSSU has faced to this point. My pick: Emporia State 24 – Missouri Southern 21

Central Missouri at Pittsburg St. : UCM comes in at 2-1 with their only loss coming in a wild 55-54 shootout at Illinois St. Senior QB Eric Czerniewski runs the UCM offense  that is ranked #1 in the country in passing and #2 in scoring. UCM beat Pitt St in 2009 23-14 but they have NEVER beaten Pitt St. two years in a row. The Gorillas are 2-0 under first year head coach Tim Beck. Pitt States ground attack is led by run/pass QB Zack Dickey who averages almost seven yards per carry and RB Terrance Isaac who is averaging over 100 yards per game rushing. The Gorillas are very tough at home. My pick:  Pitt St 34 – Central Missouri 31

Missouri Western at Washburn:  Let’s  hope this battle of two ranked teams(#11 2-0 Mo Western and #15 1-1 Washburn per ) lives up to the precedent set by last season’s classic won by Mo Western on a last second 53 yard field goal by Brad Beckwith. Washburn’s only loss is to #5 Abilene Christian. Footballs should be flying all over Yager Stadium in Topeka with two of the finest DII quarterbacks in the country doing battle in Washburn JR Dane Simoneau and Missouri Western senior Drew Newhart.  This should be a very entertaining matchup and it wouldn’t shock me to see both teams score forty or more points.. My pick: Washburn 45 – Missouri Western 41

Truman at Fort Hays St: Two 2-0 teams open their MIAA Conference season. Truman is averaging 225 yards per game on the ground while Fort Hays St. has a balanced, high scoring attack directed by senior QB Mike Garrison who has averaged 300 yards passing and 75 yards rushing through two games. The Tigers have scored 45 points in wins this season. Fort Hays has not allowed a qb sack yet this season while Truman is second in the country averaging six qb sacks per game. My pick: Fort Hays St.  35 – Truman 28
