Sun Belt Conference- Games to watch for in Week 2

Under the radar conference features a lot of under the radar teams.  Led by Middle Tennessee St and Troy, the Sun Belt has a tough group of teams that face tough teams throughout the year. An inside look at two games that feature a Sun Belt team facing a top team in the nation.

Troy at Oklahoma St.

Without a doubt Troy is not favored to win this game. Led by new starting quarterback Jamie Hampton the Troy Trojans look to pull off an upset against Oklahoma St. Upsetting the Cowboys might be a hard task to do with running back Kendall Hunter in the backfield for Oklahoma St. If Troy wants respect they will need to leave it all out on the field, win or lose.

Who to watch for on the Trojans

Returning for the Trojans are senior wide receivers Jerrel Jernigan and Teblarus Gill who will need to be releases for junior quarterback Jamie Hampton. The defense will be key facing the Cowboys high powered offense, so the eyes are on linebacker Daniel Sheffield, Barry Valcin, and Bryan Willis who are the only returning starters from last season.

Who to watch for on the Cowboys

The running back who turned heads against Washington St last week, Kendall Hunter will need to prove it was no fluke.  Quarterback Brandon Weeden will look to wode receivers Hubert Anyiam and Justin Blackmon who got more reps due to Dez Bryant’s year long suspension last year. The defense returns only three starters and ranked 93rd in the nation last year. Not good, but facing a weaker Troy opponent may be what this group needs to gain their confidence back.

Easier said then done is Oklahoma St. running over Troy, but Troy won’t roll over. Kendall Hunter will simply be to much for the Trojans to handle so I’ll take Oklahoma St.  to win at home.

Florida International at Rutgers

What else do the readers know about Florida International except “they were the team who got into the nasty brawl with Miami”?  With all due respect to the Golden Panthers, they have a very short chance at winning this game because Rutgers

Who to watch for on the Golden Panthers

Not to many names to throw out here, the offense returns all three wide receivers in T.Y. Hilton, Greg Ellingson, and Jason Frierson who will be used a lot in a passing attack that is led by Wesley Carroll, a junior quarterback. The defense is led by linebacker Toronto Smith who tied for the team lead in sacks with 3.5.

Who to watch for on the Scarlet Knights

Quarterback Tom Savage has all the makings of a true quarterback, size (6’5”- 230) and a go to weapon in Mohamed Sanu which can make Rutgers a team to keep your eye on in the 2010-11’ season. Running back Joe Martinek is the power back and will pave the way for freshman play makers, Casey Turner and Jawan Jamison. The defense returns six starters from last year including sack specialist Jonathan Freeny who might feast during this matchup against a weak Florida International offensive line.

Not really a contest here although there is always the happening of an upset, I like Rutgers to win easily in this match-up. Look for the Scarlet Knights to put on a show, making Tom Savage a name to remember.
